Ma Mère l’Oye
Carmen Fantasy for Double Bass and Orchestra
Ludwig van Beethoven
Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92
Under the direction of resident conductor Michael Laus, the orchestra begins by tackling Ravel’s Ma Mère l’Oye suite, whose five movements are each inspired by a popular fairy tale.
The MPO’s principal double bass player Gjorgji Cincievski subsequently takes up a solo role for Sankey’s virtuosic Carmen Fantasy, inspired by Bizet’s famous opera.
At its premiere, which he himself had conducted, Beethoven remarked that his Seventh Symphony was one of his best works. Its second movement, which was encored that day, proved to be particularly popular.
